End of the Year Exhaustion

Guest Blogger:  Felicia Swinford

I know it’s not the end of the calendar year but it is nearing the end of the school year and if you have children in school that is a BIG deal.  If you are a teacher of children it’s a BIGGER deal.  This is a time of utter exhaustion.  Not much energy left.

I’ve stated before that I’m studying Psalm 119.  There are 176 verses in it so it’s going to take awhile.  I’ve noticed a word that keeps popping out.  Revive.  Here are some definitions that I’ve found.

  • Revive – to return to life, consciousness, vigor, strength, or a flourishing condition; to recover from financial depression; to be quickened, restored, or renewed, as hope, confidence, suspicions, or memories; to return to notice, use, or currency, as a subject, practice, or doctrine; to become operative or valid again. (reference – Dictionary.com)
  • Revive – to live, have life, remain alive, sustain life, live prosperously, live for ever, be quickened, be alive, be restored to life or health to revive, be quickened.  (reference – Strong’s Concordance, Hebrew)

Now here’s what God’s Word says.

Psalm 119:26 – My soul cleaves to the dust; revive me according to Your word.

Psalm 119:50 – This is my comfort in my affliction, that Your word has revived me.

Psalm 119:93 – I will never forget Your precepts, for by them You have revived me.

Do you see?  The psalmist knows that God’s Word will revive, return, restore or renew his life.  They aren’t just black words on a white page.  They are the words from God Himself!  Meant to be read, studied, memorized and loved.  This incredibly long psalm is full of passages just like these.  Longing for God and His Word.  In the New Testament Peter says something similar:  “Lord, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68)  There is no parallel; nothing even close.

How are you revived?

It’s about time ….

Guest Blogger: Felicia

Yep.  Here it is almost the end of April and it’s about time for those New Year’s Resolutions to be forgotten.  You know the ones.

1.  Lose weight

2.  Call my mother more often

3.  Save money

4.  Lose weight

5.  Read my Bible every day

6.  Volunteer at my kid’s school

7.  Lose weight

And on and on they go until March–or April if you’re really committed.  I belong to that sacred group of New Year’s Resolution failures.  I gave up making them years ago (maybe decades ago!).  Just don’t have the strength of character to keep even the simplest of them.  I didn’t like feeling like a failure when I flopped so . . . out the window they went.  Until this year.

God was really speaking to me at the end of the year last year about love.  Here’s the verse that He used.  You might know it.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.

Mark 12:30

Written in red.  Can’t get around this one.  Jesus said it very clearly.  It’s loving God first, last and everything in between.  And the last time I checked my Greek, all meant all.  Everything.  I think I’ve said this before but I’m sure that I admire God, respect Him, fear Him and am thankful for Him.  But love Him with ALL of my heart, soul, mind and strength?  Not so sure on that one.  That’s where I want to be.  I kept feeling that familiar nudge in my spirit to push forward with this.  So . . . I made a New Year’s Resolution.  I’m going public with it.  Now you know.   This time there’s something different.  I’m not trying.  I’m asking God to show me what this looks like – this loving Him with all my heart soul, mind and strength.

It’s about time, don’t you think?

The Cost of Living: Healthy vs. Unhealthy

Article from Business Pundit

We all know that we should eat right, exercise and live an overall healthy lifestyle but, not everyone does. Eating healthy foods generally costs more; however, a habit of eating cheaper junk foods can lead to obesity — which is quite expensive in terms of health care costs and lifespan. Here is a look at what is costs to live, depending on whether you choose a healthy lifestyle or slide into an unhealthy one.

Tiger is not alone …..

From Fast Company …

Given all the coverage we’ve given to Tiger Woods, it makes sense to take a step back and look at the broader trend of infidelity. And this infographic digs up all the relevant dirt. Obviously, cheating is pretty common: 20% of men, and 10% of women admit to an extramarital affair. And the reasons for cheating are about what common wisdom predicts: A plurality–40%–of women who cheat want more emotional attention. About 40% of men who cheat are looking for more sexual variety.

march 2010 goals results

STOP Complaining, Criticizing, Condemning, & JudgingCheck! Failed!

Obviously I was aiming at eliminating my Complaining, Criticizing, Condemning, & Judging by 100%, but that didn’t happen.  So I failed.  However, I believe most of the time when I said negative things, God convicted me and most often I stopped right away.  A lot of times, I was convicted before the first word came out of my mouth.

Home Improvement (work on front yard)Check! Failed!

One goal was to cut down the trees in the front yard which I was successful doing; however, nothing else happened.  I really don’t like working in the yard.  Procrastination.

grad school!

My sweet, creative, and determined daughter, Bethany Hope, was accepted on Monday into Grad School at Agnes Scott College.

Bethy will be completing her undergraduate degree in Science, Technology and Culture from the Georgia Institution of Technology next month.  She has shown tremendous grit, determination, relentlessness to graduate in 4 years.  Bethy has amazed us all!

Next step for grad school is securing a student loan.  She will take donations too!  If she’s able to get a loan, she will start grad school in June.

Send money!!!!

Please pray for Bethany as she works out the details of grad school and finds a part-time job.

Congrats Bethy!  I love you.  You have always made me proud.

getaway with #1

After a busy weekend – yard work on Saturday and entertaining family on Easter, Felicia and I went to Callaway Gardens for a couple of days.

We hiked, watched Birds of Prey Show, went to the Butterfly Center, and enjoyed great food.

a little hiking .....

a little bird watching ...

a little adventure ...

Believe it or not I went “dark”.  No tweeting, blogging, texting, or phone calls.  My attention was directed towards #1.

I loved our getaway!  Felicia deserves a bigger and better vacation, but at this stage in our lives we are content with places nearby like Callaway.

#1 Rocks!

family work project

Saturday we had a Family Work Project (FWP), organized by #1 (Felicia).  Our objectives were: prep and sod the front yard, create 2 new areas for plants and flowers, and build a small patio for potted plants.

The work was hard, the weather was hot, and teamwork rules!  Here are a few pictures of our FWP!

Ryan operating the tiller

Becca - Cutting Sod!

Resting

#1 worked longer & harder me!

MISSING IN ACTION

Bethy - No show for FWP - she's the smart one!

We had a great productive and good day and the results were awesome.  Special thanks to Felicia for planning and preparing, Ryan for doing the really hard work, and Becca for jumping in and helping out.  Bethany would have been with us too, but she was returning from an overnight camping trip.

I have a great family!  I love my fam!
